Yoast SEO Google snippet preview

After you install Yoast SEO plugin, you can view a snippet preview of how your post looks like on search engine results at the bottom of WordPress post draft editor.

Yoast SEO sitemap

Yoast SEO adds the great feature of adding an auto-generated XML sitemap to your website without any extra effort from you.

What is XML Sitemap?

Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling.

In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.

Every website should have an XML sitemap for better crawling of search engine bots to index and rank your website.

Yoast SEO plugin automatically adds a sitemap to your website.

You just need to keep it enabled on your site. You can also exclude some of your posts from appearing in sitemap using Yoast SEO if you wish to do so.

Yoast SEO social customizations

Almost every blogger shares their post on Facebook and Twitter after publishing.

For better audience engagement, you need to use most attractive images, post titles and description to catch the attention of those social users.

Doing this is important because users on social networks are too quick to scroll down and overlook your post if it does not contain an engaging image and title.

Yoast SEO plugin offers you a great feature to write a different title and description and an engaging image for both Facebook and Twitter shares

#6: Website Indexable problems detection:

Yoast SEO website index check

After you install and configure Yoast SEO plugin, your website is automatically monitored daily for any indexable problems using integration.

If SEO Yoast finds any indexable problems, it notifies you on its dashboard so that you can attend to those problems timely before you incur any search engine traffic loss.

#7: Website Verification by search Engine Webmaster tools:

Yoast SEO search engine webmaster tools

It’s a great idea to submit your new blog or website to major search engines like Google, Bing, Yandex etc for better traffic.

These search engines provide webmaster tools to help you submit your website to them.

You need to verify the ownership of your website before search engines accept the same.

For this purpose, these webmaster tools provide a meta tag which you need to put on your website for ownership verification.

Yoast SEO provides a feature to put your verification meta tags provided by Google, Bing, and Yandex by which you can easily verify the ownership of your blog without touching any coding files.

#8: Defining websites cornerstone content:

Yoast SEO cornerstone content

What is cornerstone content according to Yoast SEO?

Cornerstone content pieces are those articles on your website you’re most proud of. They reflect your business, communicate your mission and are extremely well written. These are the articles you would like to rank high in the search engines. Cornerstone articles are usually explainers; these articles combine insights from different blog posts.

Think of four or five pages you would like someone to read if they first visit your website. These articles should be the cornerstones of your site.

Which articles are most precious to you? Which articles are the most complete and authoritative?

You should write cornerstone articles about the keywords you definitely want to rank for.

Yoast SEO provides this advantage of defining cornerstone articles for your website.

#9: Robots Meta Nofollow, Noindex, and Canonical URL configuration:

This is a bit technical advantage you can grab from SEO plugin by Yoast.

The HTML tag for a hyperlink looks like this

<a href=”” rel=”nofollow or noindex or cononical”>victorvijay</a>

Nofollow,noindex and cononical URL

Nofollow link:

Nofollow is a property of HTML link tag which tells search engines not to follow the link. What this property has to do with your blog? what is its use?

What has this property to do with your blog? what is its use?

What if you want to link to some other website in your post and do not want to share your SEO juice with them?

The answer is:make it a

Make it a nofollow link.

When you make a link nofollow, only your human users follow the link and search engine bots do not follow the link and do not add SEO credit to other websites you are linking to.

All of your WordPress links are dofollow by default.Nofollow is a special case where you manually make the post link nofollow.

Yoast SEO provides a way to make your post links nofollow as shown in the screenshot above.

NoIndex link:

Noindex links are those posts or pages of your website for which you do not want search engines to index your pages.

Every blogger wants to stay on the top of Google search results.

But why Noindex Pages?

You may have some content of the website like some promo codes or email bait ebooks for which you want to give access to only some privileged users

For example, in a matrimonial website bride’s profiles are visible to only those who have groom profiles. It should not be visible to everyone on the search.

Make your page no index only when you don’t want to give access to all of your users.

Yoast SEO provides an option to select noindex pages if you wish to do so.

Canonical URL:

Canonical URL is meant for handling cross-domain duplicate content

In December 2009, Google announced its support for canonical URLs to handle cross-domain duplicate content on Google blog

For some sites, there are legitimate reasons to duplicate content across different websites — for instance, to migrate to a new domain name using a web server that cannot create server-side redirects. To help with issues that arise on such sites, Google announced its support of the cross-domain rel=”canonical” link element

Canonical URL means your preferred URL for the search engines to index when you have duplicate content on more than one domain.

Make your Post URL as canonical URL using Yoast SEO plugin when you want to inform Google to index your current post URL rather than your other domain’s URL which has the same content as your current post.

Yoast SEO import and export settings

Verify all the settings and you are good to go.

Exporting settings from Yoast SEO:

What if you want to make the same SEO settings on a new or any other blog you manage?

Don’t waste time by setting the plugin again on a new site.

Just export the settings from your existing site and import it to your new blog.
